Escape From It All with a Solitudinous Stay in The Range at Dovecote

Dovecote

Let’s be honest – it’s not hard to find jaw-droppingly beautiful spots in Australia. The land down under offers something for everyone. With rainforests in the north, the desert of the Outback, and mountains scattered throughout, the country is an outdoor adventurer’s dream destination. And don’t forget the continent-nation offers some of the best coastlines on the planet. In the state of New South Wales, you can climb mountains in the morning and cool off with a dip in the ocean that afternoon.

The Range at Dovecote is ideally situated to let you take advantage of all of that and more.

Located in the town of Gerringong, about two hours south of Sydney, Dovecote is a 150-acre oceanfront luxury getaway offering just two exclusive accommodations. Surrounded by rolling farmlands and overlooking Werri Beach, the retreat provides the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere while actually only being a ten-minutes drive from town. While both vacation homes at Dovecote are stunning, The Range is a more intimate getaway, sleeping just two to four guests, rather than The Headland’s spacious eight-guest, four-bedroom layout.

Outside, The Range is a simple structure, clad all in black steel. Partially set into a small hill, the holiday home looks out to the farmland and mountains to the north, while at the back, you get views of the ocean in the east. A massive wooden deck and and plunge pool allow you to look out to the water while enjoying the soft ocean breezes.

Inside, The Range is a well-appointed, carefully-styled masculine space we would love to call home. Warm wood covers the walls and vaulted ceilings, contrasted by cool concrete floors. The open-plan layout includes a minimalist kitchen with gray cabinetry, a Scandinavian style dining table, and a living area decked out in contemporary furnishings. A ceiling-mounted fireplace in the seating area offers warmth on cool nights and is positioned in front of a wall of glass. Exterior copper louvers on the wall can be moved to open up the view out to the water or closed to provide a bit of privacy (not that you need it with no one else around).

The luxury accommodations don’t end there. Sliding walls of glass turn the dining area into an open-air room. The beds are made up with premium linens and black leather headboards. To truly relax, you can enjoy a glass of complimentary local wine while taking in views of the water from the massive soaking tub in the spa-like bathroom. Go ahead, add some bubble bath, we won’t tell anyone.

A stay at The Range is a chance to escape it all and experience true luxury while surrounded by Australia’s stunning countryside. Away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney, The Range offers a chance to fully unwind. Along with getting to explore the 150-acre property, there is a private path to Werri Beach, a lagoon, and easy access to the Kiama Coast Walk. But with a fully decked out, stylish and luxurious holiday home at your disposal, you likely won’t venture far from The Range.

Stainless Steel and Concrete Rise from the Desert Floor in this Net-Zero Home
Hidden Valley Desert House

Deserts get a bad rap. People tend to picture sand, sun, and not much else. But those who have ventured out into the seemingly inhospitable landscape know there is a subtle beauty that needs to be experienced to be appreciated. For those seeking a more simple way of life, leaving the busy city behind for a humble desert abode is the way to go. That’s just what one Arizona family did, and their home takes full advantage of all that desert life has to offer.

Designed by Wendell Burnette Architects and located in Cave Creek, Arizona, Hidden Valley Desert House is not just a place to quietly enjoy the beauty of the desert. It is also a net-zero home that gives back to the land, rising up from the desert floor to become part of the surrounding scenery. An oversized canopy serves two purposes: much-needed shading for the home and housing for the mechanical equipment which includes solar energy and rainwater collection (because, yes, it does rain in the desert).

St. Andrew’s Beach House Says ‘No Thank You’ to Oversized Vacation Homes

The trend of “McMansions” here in the United States seems to be dying down. Ever since the housing crisis in 2008, the country has seen more and more people looking to downsize for more modest homes. But Australia never got the tiny house memo and the coastline of the country is quickly becoming filled with oversized vacation homes. These massive structures, used just a few days a week, seemed wasteful to a recent client of architectural firm Austin Maynard. He challenged the team to buck the trend and create a simple weekend escape hidden in the dunes.

Located on the southern coast of Victoria in the Shire of Mornington Peninsula, St. Andrew’s Beach House stands out from its neighbors for all the right reasons. The area, which is along St. Andrew’s Beach, is crowded with enormous vacation homes. Yet turn down the dirt driveway to St. Andrew’s Beach House and you’ll discover a secret coastal retreat unlike any other.
