Shaving has never been better for men. Time was that the only way to get a close, comfortable shave was to put yourself into the hands of a barber, especially true for Black men who may have trouble with razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Now with modern razor technology and formulations, it’s possible to get a close, comfortable shave at home whether you have sensitive skin or not. Conversely, some of the most forward-thinking formulations actually hark back to botanicals, utilizing earth’s natural goodness to comfort and soothe. Here is a list of some of our favorite shaving products for 2020.
Best Shaving Cream Overall:
When it comes to finding the ideal shave cream, you want something that lathers easily, smells fantastic (but is not overbearing), and provides an even closer shave. Jack Black’s offering ticks off all those boxes and then some, thanks to its thick, velvety formula of essential oils that lubricate the skin without irritation (unlike some alcohol-based shave gels that can cause redness). Using this felt like a treat, and left our face feeling soft and supple. That’s why it’s one of our picks for The Manual 2020 Grooming Awards.
Best Shaving Cream for Sensitive Skin:
From our best friends at Bulldog Skincare comes this gel formulated with eight essential oils, including baobab, oat, and willowherb. It makes for a smooth, easy shave for anybody, but especially those with sensitive skin. It’s smooth and moisturizing and allows the razor to glide easily over the face.
Best Value Shaving Cream:
From a classic name in barbering and beard care, 100-year-old Barbasol’s foaming shave cream creates a rich, thick lather with soothing aloe for an easy shave. We love the retro look of its easy-to-hold can, but also the newfangled rust-proof aluminum bottom that won’t leave rust stains on our wet sink.
Best Luxury Shaving Cream:
Acqua Di Parma has been around since 1916, when Baron Carlo Magnani created his first fragrance, Colonia. Since then the company has focused on creating luxurious grooming products with an Italian sense of refinement. This creamy shave cream includes basil, lemon, and pomegranate extracts to prevent razor burn, and moisturizing hyaluronic acid. It’s a perfect accompaniment to your safety razor shave, but is also great as-is for when you’re on-the-go.
Best Natural Shaving Cream:
Who’s afraid of a little fine print? These days we could all use products that look toward a more unified planet. Dr. Bronner’s shaving soap is certified by USDA Organic, as well as fair trade and vegan. Fair Trade Ingredients include regenerative organic coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and sugar. Its organic hemp oil is sourced in the U.S. It couldn’t be more natural if you plucked it from a tree. Lather it up with a brush for a great shave, then relax and feel good about doing something for the planet today.
Other Shaving Creams We Love
Like a blast of peppermint for your mug, Lab Series’ luxe cream preps your skin for a close shave, while leaving a tingly, cool sensation.
A trifecta of avocado, tea tree, and citrus oils help keep your skin smooth, supple, and free from ingrown hairs. Plus, it smells like an English forest.
You can use Mënaji Clear Shave anytime, but we particularly like it for when you’re on the go. There’s no water required to use the gel, so it’s great for a quick, post-red-eye clean-up in an airplane or airport bathroom, or for camping when the nearest restroom is a hike away. Because the gel is clear, it also allows for some fine-tuned shaving for shaping mustaches, beards, and sideburns. It also incorporates a botanical-based formula for healthy skincare.
