The Four Cornerstones of Victorinox
The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.
Functionality
The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.
Innovation is our Tradition
Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.
Iconic Design
In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

Steel: Yes, it's soft and thin and only capable of so much. This knife is not intended to replace your UBW. It will not slice through steel plate. Zombies, Orcs, and other miscellaneous bad guys will not run in fear. It will not stop a lightsaber. 98% of what you do with a pocketknife does not require that level of metallurgical wizardry, despite what some folks may think. If you need that other 2%, pack your UBW, and keep the Tourist in your pocket to handle the other 98%. When hungry, eat; when thirsty, drink; when tired, sleep.
Locking implements and one-hand opening: No, it doesn't have any. If you need a locking blade for the 98% of pocketknife tasks, you need a remedial course on how to use a knife. For the other 2%, grab the right tool. One-hand opening is nice when you need it, but if you really find yourself needing it regularly, you probably already have a UBW or (even better) a fixed-blade knife for that.
Tools: This it does have. The small blade probably sees more use than the large one. The screwdrivers are great for their intended purposes, and the bottle opener is a real lifesaver. The awl (reamer) comes in handy, though the nail nick REALLY REALLY should be on the other side. The corkscrew is great for pulling drain covers, untying knots, any all kinds of other nifty stuff. The awl, being sharp, can damage things. For the times when that damage needs to be avoided, use the corkscrew. In a pinch, it'll even open a bottle of wine. The tweezers suck, but they're still tweezers. The toothpick sucks, but sometimes you need sensitive adjustment with a non-metallic tool. This particular model has enough tools to handle a lot (with a little ingenuity), but it's not too bulky if you're carrying it in slacks.
THE BOTTOM LINE It's small, handy, useful, and cost-effective. It won't scare away soccer moms. It would even be a great choice for a kid's first knife. They make great gifts (pocketknives are the gift that keeps on giving). It won't replace your UBW or any other hardcore implements. It will, however, complement them nicely. It would even be a suitable partner for another Victorinox model. Two Vics with a well-thought-out selection of tools is more useful and easier to pack than one huge one with every tool in the catalog (though I do have one of those on my desk...)
I was pleased with the knife since it looks classy but I wanted something that was more useful for everyday use. I like the Spartan because its identical to the original Swiss knife, but I wanted to look further. I stumbled onto so many different models for a variety of uses. Tools such as the wood saw, pliers, magnifying glass for instance I found that I don't use everyday. Plus I found that its better to use other more sturdier tools than a knife if you want to use pliers. The more tools make these knives too bulky and not ideal for carrying everywhere.
I wanted something simple, yet eclectic. I have a minichamp, which is great because it has tools like scissors, an orange peeler and a pen. But I found that I use scissors a lot.
Finally, I noticed the Climber and after much comparison, I decided its the best one for ME. Why? Because its not too bulky first off. It only has 3 slots for tools, making it slightly thicker than the Spartan but not as bulky as the Explorer. It has scissors which are perfect in size. It's essentially like the Spartan but with the added scissors and parcel carrier(which I find to be useless for most cases). And honestly this is all you need unless you need to cut wood or watch insects from up close with a magnifying glass. This is perfect for the urban gentleman.
Some would prefer the Tinker because they find the separate philips screwdriver more useful than the corkscrew. Well fear not because the can opener, which comes on almost all swiss knives, has a screwdriver at the tip that's perfect for even the smallest Philips heads. The the extra room for a large philips screwdriver is useless because you already have a tool for that. Plus the corkscrew is useful in party type situations. So pick this over the Tinker.
For those who want something more compact, try out the Compact model. This knife has only two slots but has almost everything including scissors. However, this knife consolidates the can opener and bottle opener. The catch? The tool is very thin and the tip isn't good for Philips screws, only good for flat heads. Also, there is no small blade.
For those who don't care for the corkscrew or scissors, get the Pioneer. Why? Because its essentially the same model used by Swiss soldiers and it looks classy. Additionally, the large blade is much bigger than the large blade of regular swiss knives.
But I recommend the Climber 100%. You even have more color options to choose from with this model. I would go with the classic red, that way everyone knows you're holding an awesome Swiss Army Knife. Happy shopping!
At 3 layers it’s not to thick or heavy but provides tools that will cover uses you didn’t know you had.
I use the corkscrew daily to untie knots in kids shoes, the tip of the can opener is a surprisingly good Phillips to change batteries in R/C remotes, the scissors to are the absolute best in the industry and the bottle cap lifter/flat head/ is a great light duty pry bar as well.
Hang it from a pocket dangler suspension clip and you’ll forget it’s in the pocket till it’s needed.
Finally, these are put together with superb engineering so the tools are densely packed.
I bought a bunch of SAKs but I probably should have just stopped with the Climber and Rambler.
