So to note, if you're doing a deep cut of some high grass, you're going to find that it bogs down if you set too low. That said, I didn't have any major issues with the first scalp so its enough to handle the job.
The first scalp did require the small bin to be emptied often. My yard is a shade under 4000 sq ft and I emptied about 6 times. YMMV. Also be sure to snap in the mulch plug properly if you're not bagging or it'll fill up really quick. Even with it in place it'll fill up but just snap it in correctly. Easy to do. No big deal.
Also the 4.0Ah battery is barely enough to handle that size of a yard for a single cut. It's a good idea to have one or two extras to take up the gap and if you are using the same 40v system to edge and blow as well you'll need them anyway. Personally I like to double cut and usually need a battery and a half (I have three batteries) to get through it all.
The charger and battery are both easy to use and the level indicator on the battery is helpful.
I've got a bermuda lawn and this doesn't get quite low enough but once I've got the lawn established and the height managed I'd switch to a reel mower and use this to clean up if I've been away from the yard for too long.
The bed is small enough where if you have bumps in the ground you can easily scalp small sections of your lawn so be aware. Also the mower is very light which makes it very easy to handle, manueuver, back up, travel over roots, etc., but it also means the mower does want to bounce a little especially if you're blasting through quickly. I'd say that's a good excuse though to level that lawn.
All in all, I recommend it if you're wanting to save some money and do a little work with some chore-ing. Once you have your height managed it makes nice even cuts (FYI no stripes, sorry).
PROS
- Easy to use and adjust
- Lightweight
- Has been reliable
- Almost no maintenance required
CONS
- Not always powerful enough
- Plan on an extra battery or two
In hindsight I might have ponied up some more for the 80v (significantly more) but I'm still happy with my purchase and really have no reason to knock off any stars. The way I see it, if you have a small yard like mine and just want to take care of tidying up your lawn, this will do the trick.
1. It needed to be ecofriendly.
2. It needed to be affordable.
3. It needed to be easy to assemble.
4. It needed to be lightweight and easy to use.
5. It needed to have a push button start.
6. It needed to cover a half acre lawn.
7. It needed to have excellent reviews.
For the first month in my home, I borrowed a riding lawn mower because I was intimidated to use the push mower. Then, I gave it a try. OMG- I’m in love. This mower is a single mom’s best friend. It was affordable, eco friendly, and easy for me to assemble without assistance. I bought two batteries and charged them both just in case. My lawn is mostly flat, but I have trees and landscaping to maneuver around. It was so easy to push that my 7yo and 9yo could push it without a problem. They gave it a try and could easily maneuver it. I’m usually athletic and in great shape, but I’m just starting to recover from Covid and have very little energy. Yet, I was able to mow the entire lawn. If I’d had more energy, I could have finished the half acre (or most of it) on one battery. As it is, I easily switched the batteries out when it died to finish the yard. It worked great, and the settings were easy to adjust for height.
Plus, I bought the leaf blower, the weed eater, and the hedge trimmer in the same brand. They all use the same battery. They’re all easy to assemble and use — and affordable especially compared to other types of lawn equipment. I just swap out the battery to do all the parts of my lawn to keep it looking nice. I’m a busy single mom and am self-employed. I don’t have a ton of time, and this mower was so easy to push that it took very little time. I didn’t use the part to collect grass clippings in. I might use that another time, but I didn’t feel like using it this time.
If there’s a con at all, I guess the battery could last a little longer. Do yourself a favor and buy two to keep charged. They could come in different colors, too, but I honestly don’t care about that so it’s not an issue for me. I have never been so pleased with a piece of lawn equipment. I love the brand, and I love how easy it has made this household task. Don’t hesitate; buy it.
No, I’m not being paid for this review … Although if the company wants to send me extra lawn equipment, I’d happily accept. ;) Either way, I’m going to tell everyone how awesome this mower is - especially for single moms and people with smaller lawns.
About half way through my first mowing the motor developed a loud clicking noise when it shut down. It continued to mow well, but the noise continued every time the motor was shut down.
Called GreenWorks support line. They wanted model numbers, serial numbers, etc. on each piece of equipment (mower, battery, battery charger) before they would help trouble shoot. Once I had everything they needed they were helpful in troubleshooting. They determined that the problem needed hands on examination and suggested 3 repair companies in my area.
A bit of an inconvenience to pack up the mower, battery, and charger and take it to the shop. Not looking forward to this process. I was pleasantly surprised by the repair facility. They called to talk about my experience and get details on the problem. Called back later that day to report they had found the problem - a part had been left off during the manufacturing process. Said they were contacting GreenWorks about getting the replacement part. Called back the next day to say the part was not available so GreenWorks was sending out a new mower which would be in early the next week.
Just picked up the replacement mower - yes it is a brand new mower. Will update this review after I mow my lawn a few times. Unfortunate that the mower had a problem, but the resolution was relatively quick and very fair. If the new mower doesn't have any issues, I will probably give it 5 stars as it cut well, was easy to assemble, and charged quickly.
I have a corded electric mower for another property which I will probably replace one of these if it works well. Much easier to not have the cord.
