Product Description
Whether they're roughing it in the woods or merely pretend-camping in the backyard, kids will love our 10-prong Marshmallow Tree. It's made from non-stick coated steel wire that's bent and turned to look like the branches of a tree, and has a rosewood-stained, tapered wood handle. Make kid-pleasing toasted sandwiches and fruit pies with our cast-iron Campfire Pie Iron that seals the edges as it warms the filling and browns the outside. Extra-long handles with wooden grips keep the cook safely away from the fire. Includes lots of delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And our set of four chrome-plated Steel Forks with wooden handles is great for hot dogs or marshmallows. Adult supervision required. Gift wrap not available. Sizes: Marshmallow Tree 40" long, Campfire Pie Iron 4-1/2" square, Steel Forks 22" long.

The instructions say to season them before you use them. We seasoned ours in the bbq on the grill at 300-400 degrees for 15 min. We first wiped them down with vegetable oil. Pam, Crisco, vegetable oil, olive oil, will all work fine. After the recommended 15 min, we repeated the process. The more times you do this the better non-stick surface you will create.
Tip: Wipe down between each use; it makes it easier to clean. Do not use soap to clean since it is cast iron. Soap will strip the seasoning away. Use a good scrub brush like a chain mail scrubber, then wipe down with towel when dry. Don't let them air dry. Water on cast iron equals rust. Also, wipe down with more oil after you have cleaned and are ready to put away. This also helps prevent rust. We do this on all our cast iron pans after each use.
Recipe ideas:
Carnea-sada. Use skirt steak, or whatever steak you choose to use and marinate with a Carnea-sada seasoning. Cook in pie-iron and serve with fixings same as you would for tacos.
Monkey Bread: Get a can of biscuits. 1/4 the biscuits dough. Put brown sugar, regular sugar, and cinnamon in Ziploc bag. Place cut up dough in bag and shake. Place dough in pie iron and cook until golden brown and dough is done. One of our favorites the kids love.
Grilled cheese sandwich: Make your favorite grilled cheeses any way you want and cook in pie-iron. For really good one try Pesto, Avocado, Havarti and Turkey. Picture below is of ham and cheese. Really easy to cook in pie iron and tastes awesome.
Update: 5/18 Almost two years later and they work just like the day we got them. Definitely recommend.

SIZE: This square pie iron is the perfect size to accommodate a full piece of bread, small flour tortilla, egg roll wrapper, etc. And, you want the outer layer to flow over the top of the iron so that when you clamp it shut, that extra layer around the edge forms a seal.
DESIGN: There is a clamp closer to the handle that easily opens and closes the two halves of the pie iron. The other end of the pie iron folds completely off so you can prepare each half of the iron with your ingredients.
COOKING: We follow the instructions in the cookbook, but this iron only takes about three minutes on each side to produce an evenly cooked pie. And, because the latch allows you to open it while cooking, you're able to see how the outer layer is doing.
CLEANUP: We use a nylon-bristled brush with warm water to clean the irons. When finished, we lightly run in some oil & sea salt. Cleanup is usually simply, unless the fillings spill out onto the iron, which shouldn't happen if the pies are not overfilled.
I researched and prepared a plethora of meal and snack ideas ahead of time. And everything was a huge hit! We made blueberry stuffed French toast for breakfast, ham and cheese "hot pockets" for lunch, and fruit pies for a late night snack (pictured: strawberry cream cheese fruit pie using croissant dough dusted with powered sugar). We used both bread and croissant dough for different pies and they both worked out great! But the croissant dough really surprised me at how easy it cooked up and how delicious it was!
The pie iron itself is very sturdy. It also comes out of the fire very hot! So make sure you keep them away from curious kids once you pull them out of the fire. The handles are comfortable and there is a metal latch that keeps the 2 sides locked together while cooking.
I would definitely recommend this for camping! Everyone enjoyed the food we made with them. There are a lot of recipe ideas available on the internet or be creative - the possibilities are endless!

It took a while to season per the instructions - cast iron retains a lot of heat an took time to cool before applications of shortening but once done I had great fun experimenting with toasted treats and didn't have problems with sticking. I tried egg and bacon toasted sandwiches, toasted cheese filled tortilla wrap, and finally apple pastries using store bough ready-rolled chilled croissant dough and tinned apples - all were super easy and were a winner with the family. With a hot fire from a small firebox stove I was turning the pastries and sandwiches around in about 5 minutes each. There are lots of recipe ideas on youtube.
Well pleased with this pie iron. It's going to be a great addition to our camping kitchen and depending on how we get on in the field I may purchase a second one.
