Part 2
After relaxing and admiring (and a couple of drinks) we collapsed the tent and repacked with what I would say was 80% correct.
Overall I am very happy and can’t wait to try for real.
We used this on a two week vacation with four set-ups/teardowns. First time setting up following the terse instructions it took 45 minutes, and a seam ripped, right near a peg where it should have been reinforced.
Next time setting up the tent it took us 30 minutes. The challenge is getting everything perfectly lined up to avoid wrinkles on the top, with installing, respositioning poles restaking etc. to get things straight.
You know how good tents have little loops where you can attach a loft, drying lines etc? This has ONE in the sleeping area, top center. Good for a light, or drying an item. Can't do both. There should have been a loop in each upper corner to attach a loft or line for drying things.
Once set up, the tent has two flat panels on top, one over the garage and another smaller one over the sleeping area. I wish I had known this prior to purchase, no tent should ever have that. That's where water pools when it rains, and where water pools it leaks, which it did over the garage. So far the section over the sleeping area hasn't leaked, but I don't quite trust it, so when we leave the tent we have to put our sleeping bags in waterproof bags or bins or in the car. Being waterproof is a core function of a tent.
While we were away a hail storm (pea sized) passed over that lasted ten minutes. Piles of hail lay around, we scooped up handfuls. I was positive they would collect in the top panels and the weight would collapse the tent, but when we got to our tent it was still standing amid the piles of hail. But all our stuff inside was wet. Drive to town, find a laundromat, dry our sleeping bags.
When the tent is closed up to keep out even a light rain there is no airflow. The four triangular popups are not sufficient. It was a nice 60f outside with a breeze and inside the tent it was humid and sweltering. To get airflow the rear door must be opened and then it will rain into the sleeping area. If the front and rear doors were instead flaps (attached at the top, like the Marmot Orbit 4P) it could be opened and supported by poles for airflow/access and not let rain in.
The pegs are dark green and are easy to lose in grass. They do not have hooks for anchoring the tent, only shallow detents. They bend easily, you must use a hammer and you must hammer them in straight. I bought my own high quality pegs.
Zippers are cheap, they catch and are difficult for my 7 year old to use. You must hold another part of the tent to smoothly glide the zippers or they'll catch. Part of the problem is that the doors are curved, if they were straight flaps it would not be an issue. These will be a problem over time, I have no expectation of durability from them.
So what does this tent do well? I love the garage area. Ostensibly I bought it for car camping bringing my dirt bike, to provide shade and rain protection for my gear, repairing the bike, or just having a cup of coffee or lounging. It works well for that, provided it's not raining.
It is easier to set up than the Marmot Orbit because the VUZ inner mesh tent hook into the 'rain' fly, i.e. you only have to raise one tent... The Marmot has a freestanding sleeping area that must be set up first, then you set up the rain fly and garage over that. But it is far more difficult to set up than my twenty year old REI dome tents (which, despite sap and UV discoloration are still water proof and have far better ventilation and have no tears .... And cost less than this VUZ tent).
The aluminum poles are excellent. I will never again buy a tent with fiber glass poles.
I regret not buying the Marmot Orbit when it was available, despite priced $200 higher. Not sure I'd spend $400 more on a Redverz, but maybe, if it lasts longer.
