Gin drinkers love the appeal of Barr Hill Gin, with its mix of botanicals and sweet, local honey. But the popular Vermont-based Caledonia Spirits, makers of this award-winning gin, make more than just this unique expression. In addition to a wide variety of spirits, the brand recently announced the launch of Phyllis Vermont Rye Whiskey.

Phyllis Vermont Rye Whiskey

Phyllis Rye Whiskey is made with a mash bill of responsibly grown regional grains, including 84% winter rye and 16% barley. Aged for a minimum of ten full years, it is distilled, matured, and bottled on site. According to Caledonia Spirits, the result is a 93-proof, memorable, multi-layered whiskey centered on flavors like rye spice, toasted oak, dried cherries, and vanilla beans. The finish is sweet, spicy, and leaves you craving more.

“This has been a journey of patience, education, and connection with Vermont, ” Ryan Christiansen, President and Head Distiller, says.

“We’ve been storing away barrels of rye for over 10 years. Now it’s time to share.”

He adds, “The status quo is depleting and polluting our lands, while selling generic whiskey that largely comes from the same factories. Phyllis won’t be a part of that. If we plant seeds in the ground, we feed the soil. If we put whiskey in a barrel, we do it with patience. And if you’re going to buy a bottle of Phyllis Rye whiskey, you’re going to know it’s made the right way.”

Where can I find them?

Phyllis Rye Whiskey is available at Caledonia Spirits, online, and at select retailers for the suggested retail price of $55 for a 750ml bottle.

The best beers from California you can buy anywhere
California is more than just IPAs
Sierra Nevada

Currently, more than 9,000 breweries of all sizes operate in the US. That’s an awful lot of IPAs, stouts, and lagers to choose from. Some states are more saturated with breweries (per capita) than others. This includes places like Vermont, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, and, of course, California. While I could take a deep dive into all the biggest beer-producing states, today is all about The Golden State.

I have a special affinity for California beer, and it’s because of one style in particular. Sure, you can find a beer style to fit every palate in the state, but in California, the IPA reigns supreme. In fact, if you look at almost any list ranking the best beers in the state, it will be littered with IPA options. While I often imbibe pilsners and other lagers (as well as wheat beers and other lighter beers) in the summer as well as stouts and porters (and other dark beers) in the winter, I always go back to the classic West Coast IPA.
