Every cup of this coffee helps feed someone in need — meet the woman behind the mission

The impactful difference a cup of coffee can make

Debbie Cross, entrepreneur and CEO of Sapphire Coffee, has built a brand rooted in purpose. Every bean in her ethically sourced coffee is harvested with care, and 100% of the proceeds go toward feeding the hungry and aiding global disaster relief efforts. From sending essential supplies during crisis response to creating sustainable food solutions for underserved countries, Sapphire Coffee is a daily reminder that small choices, like your morning cup, can have a global ripple effect.

I chatted with Cross to learn more about Sapphire Coffee and its inspiring mission and to explore more about how every batch of Sapphire Coffee tells a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and unparalleled quality.

The inspiration behind Sapphire Coffee

“Simply put… my father [inspired me to build a brand with such a bold, purpose-driven model”, Cross shares. “Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, I watched my father live out his form of philanthropy. Every year for his birthday, instead of celebrating for himself, he would bring 50 children from a local orphanage into our home and feed them. That act of service shaped me. It taught me that true joy comes from giving. Sapphire Coffee was born with that same spirit, to feed those in need and be a light in dark times.”

Cross shared that she remembers the day she first realized coffee could be a vehicle for change. “I remember it vividly. It was the morning of November 8, 2023. I woke up with complete clarity and said to myself, ‘I’m going to start a coffee company where 100% of the proceeds go toward helping feed, clothe, and shelter people around the world.’ That moment changed everything for me.”

Journey from bean to cup

From farm to cup, Sapphire Coffee wants its customers to understand that change doesn’t always have to come in some grand act of service. “Something as simple as a cup of coffee, something you drink every day—can completely alter the trajectory of someone’s life. For you, it may just be your morning routine, but for someone else, it’s survival. We believe that when we all take small, consistent steps, together we can be the change this world needs, one sip at a time,” Cross shares.

The journey of Sapphire Coffee beans begins with a farmer whose family is supported by fair wages and dignified work. Next, the beans are harvested by hands that are cared for. They travel through our supply chain, managed with intention, and end up in your coffee cup. “But along the way, that same cup is helping provide clean water, food, and shelter to someone in crisis. It’s more than coffee, it’s connection, compassion, and change.”

The work of Sapphire Coffee

One recent moment that truly reflects the heart of Sapphire Coffee happened in Asheville, South Carolina. “After a devastating storm swept through the town, families were left without power, shelter, or necessities. The destruction was overwhelming, but because of the support generated through Sapphire Coffee, we were able to step in right away. We provided emergency supplies, essential items, and generators to help the community begin rebuilding. That experience reaffirmed why we do this work. Whether it’s a storm in the U.S., a crisis in Colombia, or a food shortage in Africa, our mission remains the same: to serve communities in urgent need, wherever they are,” Cross says.

Cross believes coffee drinkers can take matters into their own hands by drinking with purpose. Every sip of Sapphire Coffee directly supports feeding, clothing, and sheltering someone in need. “It’s not just a cup of coffee, it’s a daily act of compassion.” Not only can you feel good making a decision that helps support others, but each cup of Sapphire Coffee also delivers big taste without the big price tag. All Sapphire Coffee is 100% Organic, specialty-grade, and Fairtrade.

Ascênda is the tequila brand that’s betting on transparency, not celebrities
How Ascênda's founders built a premium sipping tequila and a clean canned drink from the same tequila, and why that should matter
Flare, Light, Agavaceae

Walk down the canned-cocktail aisle at just about any grocery or liquor store right now and the amount of new drinks popping up is pretty mind-blowing. The ready-to-drink (RTD) category has exploded over the last few years, and tequila sodas in particular have become the default for a younger generation that wants something lower in calories, and with cleaner ingredients. But there's an uncomfortable secret behind a lot of those shiny cans. The words “made with real tequila” often mean almost nothing. In many cases, only 51% of the alcohol inside is actually tequila; the rest could be other types of alcohol and additives you wouldn’t expect. This has been the game plan manufacturers have used for decades, and the plan Ascênda was created to close.

Ascênda, whose name means “to rise,” is the work of two founders, Mark Bland and Nicholas Soglanich (Nic), who looked at that crowded shelf and saw an opportunity rather than another trend to chase. Their pitch is refreshingly simple: a ready-to-drink tequila soda made with tequila good enough to sip on its own, and water good enough to sell on its own at any Whole Foods or high-end grocery store. No malt liquor (yes, really), sugar, and no artificial flavors, no mystery. You get 100% blue agave tequila, sparkling high-pH water sourced from the highlands of Jalisco, and a deliberate blend of electrolytes, magnesium, potassium, and sodium that the founders chose because they're the same minerals a lot of us already reach for during the day.

Dinner at Benoit is like a Graduate Course on Classical French Cusine
At Alain Ducasse's Benoit, a century of Parisian tradition lives on in Midtown Manhattan.
Food, Food Presentation, Meal

Classical French cuisine is the culinary equivalent of the Western canon: an ancient and ever-fertile tradition that shaped—and continues to shape—everything that came later. Just as old books provide a deeper understanding of modern civilization, old-guard French restaurants deepen one's understanding of modern gastronomy.

Benoit, a bistro in Midtown Manhattan, is like a graduate seminar on the history of French cooking. The original Benoit has been a Parisian landmark since 1912, one of the French capital's most venerated bistros de tradition. After stewarding the restaurant for generations, the Petit family entrusted it to chef Alain Ducasse in 2005. Since then, Ducasse has opened sister restaurants in Tokyo, New York, and Kyoto.
