Mount Gay is the oldest operating rum distillery in the world. It has been producing awarding-winning rums in Barbados since 1703. Recently, it added to its portfolio with the fourth expression from its popular Single Estate Series.

The second spirit in the single harvest year in this series, it was crafted by Master Blender Trudiann Branker. This limited release is a blend of two pot still distillations rums from the 2019 Mount Gay Estate sugar cane harvest in St Lucy, Barbados. It was matured for five years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels.

According to the brand, the result is a complex, memorable 55% ABV rum that begins with a nose of green apple, red fruits, white roses, jasmine, toffee, vanilla, and gingerbread. The palate is a symphony of flavors including cherry, red fruits, salty smoke, oak, and floral hints. The finish is pleasantly bitter with notes of caramel and red fruits.

“This warm Bajan golden hour landscape is reflected in the stunning orange label, 25 representing for the release year, 04 for the release number in the series,” said Branker.

“Vt19 refers to the single year sugar cane harvest from 2019 used in this expression, and dp stands for the blending of distillates from two distinct pot still distillations.”

Where can I buy it?

This is a limited-edition expression. Only  2,754 bottles of this soon-to-be highly sought-after rum will be made available worldwide. To add to that, only 312 will be made available in the US at select retailers for the suggested price of $350 for a 700ml bottle.

The best beers from California you can buy anywhere
California is more than just IPAs
Sierra Nevada

Currently, more than 9,000 breweries of all sizes operate in the US. That’s an awful lot of IPAs, stouts, and lagers to choose from. Some states are more saturated with breweries (per capita) than others. This includes places like Vermont, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, and, of course, California. While I could take a deep dive into all the biggest beer-producing states, today is all about The Golden State.

I have a special affinity for California beer, and it’s because of one style in particular. Sure, you can find a beer style to fit every palate in the state, but in California, the IPA reigns supreme. In fact, if you look at almost any list ranking the best beers in the state, it will be littered with IPA options. While I often imbibe pilsners and other lagers (as well as wheat beers and other lighter beers) in the summer as well as stouts and porters (and other dark beers) in the winter, I always go back to the classic West Coast IPA.
