How to make the Crimson Tradewinds cocktail, a tropical delight

Rum, Italicus, fruit, and citrus join in tropical harmony

Lido Key Bar.
Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota

A resort-level cocktail is best enjoyed at the resort itself. A close second: Making that drink at home, affording you a little taste of paradise. You can close your eyes and imagine you’re under a thatch roof with only ocean and palm tree fronds on the horizon.

Our daydreaming has been taking us to the Gulf Coast. Specifically, the turquoise waters in and around Sarasota. There’s a great resort out there offering sweeping views and mixing up some fantastic tiki cocktails. You know, tropical numbers that fit right in with the surroundings.

This one comes from the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota and the gorgeous resort’s excellent watering hole, The Lido Key Tiki Bar. Read on for the full recipe.

Crimson Tradewinds

Here, we get a kiss of crimson thanks to some strawberry puree and the drink is rounded out by some tropical fruit, coconut rum, and bergamot. Go nuts with the garnishes as that’s typically the way with most tiki drinks.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 ounces RumHaven Coconut Rum
  • 1/2 ounce Cruzan Mango Rum
  • 1/2 ounce Italicus
  • 3/4 ounce strawberry purée
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 ounce simple syrup
  • Coconut rum, orchid, pineapple leaves for garnish

Method:

  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake hard to fully integrate the strawberry purée and create body.
  3. Strain into glass over fresh cube ice and finish with the coconut rim and tropical garnish expression.

There’s a lot more in that department. Check out some related materials, like our features on Italicus cocktail recipes and Tampa Bay travel. Here’s to an adventure-driven spring and summer.

Sagamore Whiskey doubles down on Maryland roots with two new releases
Sagamore Whiskey is dropping two new expressions: one national high-rye bourbon, and one for America's 250th birthday.
Alcohol, Beverage, Liquor

Long before Kentucky bourbon took over the American whiskey conversation, Maryland was distilling quality juice: rye whiskey. The folks at Sagamore Whiskey have spent years trying to bring that legacy back, and this month it's making the case twice.

First off, the Baltimore-based company (which you may remember as Sagamore Spirit) is dropping a wide-release: Sagamore High Rye Straight Bourbon goes national July 1 at an SRP of $50.

The third Prohibition Collection revives long-dead labels from the years Buffalo Trace was licensed to bottle medicinal whiskey.
Alcohol, Beverage, Liquor

Buffalo Trace has a habit of turning its own history into whiskey, and the third edition of its Prohibition Collection is possibly the most extreme example yet.

This year's annual limited release is five bottles reviving whiskeys the distillery legally produced during Prohibition, back when it was known as the George T. Stagg Distillery.
