Four Roses is well-known for its award-winning whiskeys. Recently, the brand announced the launch of its exciting new Experimental Series. This limited-edition collection will allow the team to get creative with recipes, ages, and aging vessels. The first release in this new series was inspired by techniques used by Japanese single malt whisky-makers.
Four Roses Experimental Series No. 001

The first release from this new series combines American and Japanese craftsmanship. It begins as a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. But instead of maturing in traditional charred American white oak, it’s aged in rare Japanese Mizunara oak barrels.
But it’s more than just maturation in rare oak. Experimental Series No. 001 was created by trial and error featuring various recipes, yeast strains, barrel specifications, toast, and char before the specific flavor profile was selected. Master Distiller Brent Elliott chose a six-year-old OBSK recipe because it had the desired sweetness and complemented the Mizunara oak’s spice.
The result is a 104-proof, 6-year-old bourbon that creates a truly unique, memorable whiskey experience. The brand says it’s unlike any of the whiskeys in its portfolio. Four Roses Experimental Series No. 001 is truly something different. According to the brand, it’s “surprisingly rounded and soft, layered with rich spiced vanilla and natural flavors not found in American oak.”
Elliot is extremely excited about this new chapter in Four Roses bourbon.
“It allows us to take the craftsmanship that’s been at the heart of Four Roses and apply it in entirely new ways, experimenting with finishes and techniques that reveal dimensions of flavor our fans haven’t experienced before,” he says.
“For me, it’s about pushing boundaries while staying true to the character of Four Roses Bourbon and giving our fans the chance to join us on that journey of discovery.”
