Walker Slater Menswear, Inspired by the Scottish Highlands

Editor’s Note: Last November we had the pleasure of spending 10 captivating days in Scotland. Below is but one adventure of many from our stay. We hope the joy we experienced comes through in all our posts and missives from our adventure, which no doubt read better with a wee dram in hand.

If you want to channel classic Scottish Highland style, Walker Slater is the brand to shop. Founded by Paul Walker, the renowned brand is now an Edinburgh staple — and a discerning, refined option for the gentleman who appreciates rugged-yet-classic style, at home or abroad.

As Walker developed a love of tweed — combined with a love of the rolling Highlands — the brand’s classic roots started to take shape. Now, Walker Slater counts two stores in London, plus the brand’s home base in Edinburgh and an upcoming project focused on women’s fashion in Glasgow.

If there’s one particular item every guy should have in his wardrobe, it’s “a good, robust, well worn and loved Harris Tweed jacket from Walker Slater.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Walker Slater, the brand focuses on a specific take on “careless elegance” — for a modern-day example, think of James Bond’s Scottish highland wear in “Skyfall” (brogue boots, textured corduroys, a field jacket and a jaunty scarf — accented by a shotgun, naturally). Yet, Walker Slater goes far beyond traditional country wear, producing versatile tailoring up there with the best of them.

Walker Slater’s menswear channels both the grit and glamour of the Highlands, with a run of stylish tweed jackets and classic tweed trousers in a plethora of beautiful fabric varieties. The brand also features a selection of functional men’s rainwear and classic knitwear made from local Scottish yarns, high in quality and designed to last for years. However, it’s the brand’s tweed jackets that draw perhaps the most attention from customers.

“A good tweed jacket can be casual or dressed up,” Walker said. Indeed, a rich tweed jacket — like other stylish blazers for fall, winter or any colder climate — can be worn on its own atop everything from a slim henley to textured staples like a Scottish sweater or a classic chambray shirt.

And the versatile nature of the brand’s classic menswear — tailored-yet-accessible — actually fits in well with what today’s customer is shopping for.

“In some ways, menswear has become quite casual,” he said. “But it can still be stylish and have great details and versatility.” The brand’s approach to functionality across multiple situations often results in repeat customers, Walker added.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Walker thinks the brand’s signature style is a must-have.

Walker Slater also has a little something for everyone in terms of styling — the brand’s Edward tweed jacket offers a slightly more traditional cut with broad shoulders and a nipped waist. The Martin tweed jacket, on the other hand, is considerably more fitted and cut for the modern gentleman, Walker said.

Cartier Rewind on wrist

Wristwatches may be distinctly masculine pieces of hardware now, thanks to some very popular people in pop culture and in our own history adopting them. British super spy James Bond, movie stars, and athletes are the people we look up to who wear watches that catch our eye. Soldiers, cops, firefighters, and first responders wear watches they trust to ensure they can save lives. Pilots and divers created an entire industry around watches specifically designed for their vocations. And the very first pilot's watch was none other than a Cartier watch.

Alberto Santos-Dumont was a pioneer in the flight world and was one of the first people on Earth to achieve air travel. He was a competitor of the Wright Brothers, and, depending on the source, he preceded them in flight. In any case, the French celebrity went to Louis Cartier, another pioneer of his craft, and procured a square timekeeper meant for the wrist. The Cartier Santos Dumont was born. Over a century later, Cartier attended Watches and Wonders and presented the newest in the line of Santos watches, one that reverses time.
