We are big sock lovers in our office and are pretty excited that the “sockless” look has faded into its smelly, blistered folder labeled “Why?” Socks have come a long way from the tube socks we wore as kids and the weird, pantyhose-thin ones our dads wore to the office. Now there is a plethora of brands — many made right here in the U.S. — that are providing men with a little sock-it-to-me excitement in our daily dress.
Check out our sock gift guide below and pick out a few you wouldn’t mind unwrapping this season.
Chup Doma – $35
If you really want to splurge (on you or someone else), we are big fans of the Japanese brand Chup. Made on old-school stocking frame machines, they do Fair Isle better than the Scottish do and are as soft as Santa’s beard.
Sid Mashburn Merino Over-the-Calf Dress Sock – $24
Our favorite menswear store in America has some seriously sartorial socks in nearly every color of the rainbow. Hand-linked in Italy (so no rough toe seam!) and so tall they won’t fall, these are great gifts for guys who wear suits on the regular and need a snazzy sock to give their daily routine a little luxury.
2XU Flight Compression Socks – $40
There are about 1.73 million people flying on a daily basis. That is a lot of swollen ankles. We always wear compression socks when flying to help our circulation (and so we can fit back into our shoes when we land). This pair from 2XU is hard to beat.
Farm to Feet McComb Lightweight Plaid Crew Socks – $21
Go on and get all holiday-ish with these festive red and green, 100 percent Merino plaid socks. Farm to Feet are made in North Carolina using all American materials, including wool from the American Sheep Industry ranchers.
Lululemon T.H.E Sock – $18
Your brother could really benefit from an upgrade from those worn-out Hanes athletics socks he sports to the gym. This pair from Lululemon are thin (no bunching up in your sneaker!) and have anti-stink Silverescent Technology, as well as micro-cushioning in the heel and toe for extra comfort.
Homespun Knitwear Top Stripe Sock – $28
Canada-based Homespun Knitwear was founded in 2009 and has since become a go-to brand for the serious sock lover. Created with a handmade cotton blend, we love the all-over marled design.
Sunspel Patterned Sock – $30
While Sunspel is a heritage British brand, they know the best socks are made in Italy. Crafted from high-quality long-staple cotton and nylon yarn, this chevron design will give an added subtle pop to any gent’s wardrobe.
Wigwam Merino Lite Hiker – $19
Proudly knit in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, since 1905, Wigwam is doing it all right: The factory has installed solar panels and sources wool from American yarn spinners (who buy from American wool growers!). We love a sock that feels good on every level.
To Boot Light Blue Socks – $20
This New York City-based shoe brand has rolled out a rockin’ line of socks. Since we can’t bear brown or black, these light blue socks are our pick to liven up a look, be it business or beer time.
American Trench Kennedy Luxury Athletic Sock – $20
We will end this roundup with a sock for the man who has to have it all: an athletic look with a luxury feel. Inspired by a photo of JFK wearing a similar looking pair, these socks are knit in Reading, Pennsylvania, from American-grown cotton. The style can work with sneakers, but we recommend just going full Kennedy and paring them with loafers.
