Inspired by a shared frustration at not being able to find a briefcase that could keep up with their busy lives in two of the world’s most hectic cities, Matthew Stuart and Jimmy Lau founded Stuart & Lau, a namesake collection of stylish men’s bags built for ultimate mobility.
“Jimmy was living in New York and I was living in Hong Kong and neither of us felt like any of the everyday bags we tried to use worked with the daily motion of our lives,” begins Stuart.
“Traditional bags are constructed using a lot of different materials,” he continues, “which helps add structure, but makes them cumbersome and heavy.”
The duo decided to strike out on their own to design a bag that was as lightweight and streamlined as possible without sacrificing style.
The result was the Cary Briefcase.
The Cary ($288) is constructed with a classic silhouette, but swaps out the traditional weighty leather for light waterproof fabrics. This makes for a thin, aerodynamic design that moves easily with its owner.
In addition to its form, the briefcase also includes easily accessible outside pockets, extra straps for an umbrella and an internal padded computer compartment, which can hold a 15″ laptop. All of these features make for a bag that is stylish, but also extremely practical.
“As we were designing the Cary Briefcase , we scrutinized over every detail to make sure they contributed to a bag that was ergonomically sound,” states Stuart. “We were so happy with the design of the Cary, that we decided to expand the single bag into an entire collection.”
Since the Cary, Stuart and Lau have developed two more bags, the Constant Briefcase and the Monaco Weekender.
The Constant ($298) includes all the features of the Cary as well as a full length zipper and magnetically secured external sleeves. The Weekender ($338) borrows from the utilitarian design of the briefcases while providing additional features (such as increased internal storage capacity and interior pockets) that make it perfect for travel.
The Cary, Constant and Weekender bags come in black, charcoal or navy. The collection can be viewed in full, here.
