Denim should be easy.    Like your favorite whiskey, your choice of jean should be a reliable and solid go-to for any occasion.   Finding the perfect pair, however, is not always so simple.   With the mass amount of brands, fits, and sizing, the search can seem daunting.  Your solution: Simon Miller.  The men’s denim brand, which launched in 2006, has developed a cult following and for good reason.  “We’ve spent five years perfecting one fit and we think that we have found the perfect proportions for a slim-straight jean,” explains partner, Jake Sargent.  Along with a fit that works on many different body types, Simon Miller uses the highest quality Japanese selvedge fabrics and constructs each pair in Los Angeles using vintage techniques.

With the introduction of the M002 Gunnison jean, it’s safe to say that the brand has created the essential pair of men’s denim.  Sargent describes it as “a new twist on the classic

raw indigo,” using a custom developed Japanese 2×1 selvedge fabric and Italian hardware. The indigo-grey jean is not only durable but offers a sophisticated aesthetic that can transition from dressier occasions to casual weekend wear.  “The appeal of denim is its ease and durability, it shouldn’t require too much thought,” says Sargent.  Mission accomplished.

Simon Miller has begun expanding its collection beyond simply denim to include knitwear and shirting.  The solid offerings showcase their signature nod to heritage and dedication to quality craftsmanship.  Yet, it’s still their denim that’s a must for any refined man’s closet.  Heck, Simon Miller may just be the Johnnie Walker Blue Label of your wardrobe.

A Guide to Raw Denim Jean Selection and Care
Levi’s 501 Original ShrinkTo-Fit

How’s that old Ike and Tina Turner version of the song go? “We never ever do nothing nice and easy. We always do it nice and rough.”

Seems like that’s an apt way to describe the way most of us approach our blue jeans. We want them to be soft and broken-in. We do it nice and easy by buying a pair that’s already been washed, ripped, and repaired, blended with stretch fiber for ease and shape retention — in plain words, letting somebody else handle the rough part. But for a more satisfying, personalized experience, we like doing it the old fashioned way: buying a pair of stiff, raw denim jeans and going through the nice and rough work of breaking them in for ourselves.

The Future of Jeans is Here with these Alternative Fabrics to Cotton Denim
lucky brand tencel

As many times as I’ve changed my personal style over the years, the one thing that’s never changed is my insistence on jeans made from 100% cotton. Anything woven with spandex, polyester, or other synthetic fibers did not, in my view, qualify as real denim. If the prospectors of Levi Strauss’ era wouldn’t have been able to wear it, then it didn’t count as real jeans.

These days, though, my views have changed. In a world where cotton agriculture and manufacture consumes more resources than any other fiber, insisting on 100% cotton seems positively un-American.

The DSPTCH X Descente Collection is Packable Clothing Done Right
dsptch descente colletion packable clothing paa 01 3185

Packable clothing is some of the most utilitarian pieces of clothing or gear that you'll ever own -- at least, from our do-everything outdoor-adventuring opinion. From down jackets that pack into their own pockets to T-shirts, pants, and vests that do the same (or better), packable clothing is integral to ultralight backpacking, for auto-related weather emergencies or strandings, or even just so you're always ready for the next big adventure.

When it comes to packable clothing, we prefer the kind that also doubles as activewear. This means we're looking for performance fabrics that wick moisture, regulate temperature, and dry quickly. It also doesn't hurt if the clothing can pack down into a size that is much smaller than it would be if folded in the regular way. Luckily, luxury Japanese performance brand Descente has teamed up with San Francisco design studio DSPTCH for the Descente X DSPTCH Packable Clothing Collection. Including five pieces -- a jacket, a vest, t-shirt, long sleeve T-shirt, and shorts -- the packable collection does just that: packs down into tightly compressed pouches to make storing and carrying easier.
