Feel Good Friday: Timepieces Forged From the Leather of Rock Gods

Before we begin, let’s take a minute to determine what exactly is rock ‘n’ roll. Shredding on a guitar in front of thousands of fans? Absolutely. Ostentatious leather? Of course. Rampant drug use? Yeah, unfortunately. Rehab? Well . . . yes.

If those are our rock ‘n’ roll criteria, then Nixon — the renowned watch and accessory brand — is very rock ‘n’ roll. They’re taking the leather donated by some of the greatest rock legends of all time, repurposing it to create one-of-a-kind timepieces, and donating the proceeds to MusiCares — a substance addiction recovery charity for troubled musicians.

Rock gods Ozzy Osbourne, Keith Richards, Steven Tyler, Pete Townshend, Eddie Van Halen, and Tom Waits have donated leather jackets, boots, and guitar straps to The Rock LTD Collection. Perhaps best of all are the leather swatches from Ringo Starr’s personal collection (side note: having a personal collection of leather swatches is definitely rock ‘n’ roll).

If you think about it, this leather’s journey is a stellar allegory for the average rock god’s career. Leather, an opulent symbol of early success, falls into disuse and is eventually turned into a watch — an item associated with maturity and responsibility. The fact that all watch proceeds will go toward addiction recovery further strengthens this narrative, mirroring many rockers’ own paths to sobriety.

These reformed leather pieces have been paired with Nixon’s Time Teller, 51-30 Chrono, and Sentry Chrono timepieces, and are expected to become available for purchase in the middle of November. Each watch will come with a certificate of authenticity. To purchase these watches, you’ll need to a) have several thousand dollars and b) migrate to your nearest ultra-premium boutique (listed below).

MusiCares was established by The Recording Academy — the organization behind the Grammys — in 1989. For over 25 years, MusiCares has been providing a safety net for musicians struggling with mental and physical health issues — particularly substance abuse. If you don’t have the money to purchase one of these watches yourself, you can still do your part by supporting MusiCares in any way you can.

The Rock LTD Collection will be sold exclusively at Westime (Rodeo, Beverly Hills), Barneys (Beverly Hills and NYC), colette (Paris, France), Selfridges (London, UK), Ron Herman (Japan), Nixon Chadstone (Australia), Nixon London (Newburgh Street and Covent Garden), Nixon Paris, and Nixon’s first New York City retail location (opening late November, 2015).
