One of fashion’s best-kept secrets has finally arrived in New York City. Until recently, fans of COS, the modern essentials brand designed by H&M, had to travel to one of the company’s 114 stores outside the US. Now they just need to head on to the newest, 4,950-sq.-foot men’s and women’s flagship located in the heart of SoHo. (For those of you on the West Coast, there’s an outpost in Los Angeles, but at four floors the new SoHo store is the one to beat.)
Not unlike its international locations, COS SoHo features raw steel fixtures, concrete and wood designed with a modular feel, but the real focus is on the clothing—updated basics with a sleek high fashion sensibility and a fast fashion price tag. It’s true you can buy tees, underwear, socks, belts, and sweatpants here, but the best steals are simple items such as hard-to-find, perfect fitting dress shirts with smaller point collars or banded collars to ribbed sweaters, bomber jackets and winter coats, all styled with an easy slim fit and crisp, minimalist look. Most if not all fabrics have a luxurious, compact hand.
Admittedly, COS won’t be for everyone. There’s the odd square collar sweater and collarless jacket this season that’s sure to attract a younger, fashion-forward crowd. But if you’re looking for smart, no-fuss pieces other than the likes of, say, Banana Republic or Zara, to make a dashing statement in the workplace, we think COS’s are as fine as they come. 129 Spring Street, New York, NY 10012. (212) 389-1247. Mon-Sat 10 am – 8 pm, Sun 12 -7 pm.
