It turns out that there might not be any more ‘Last of Us’ games after all

Creator Neil Druckmann said that he wouldn't count on a third game.

Since the first game premiered in 2014, The Last of Us has been one of the premiere gaming franchises. What’s more, the franchise has translated well to the small screen, with an HBO adaptation that earned praise from both critics and fans.

As we get ready for a second season of the HBO series, which will adapt the more controversial The Last of Us: Part II, one thing fans of the franchise still wonder about is whether there will be any more games in this universe.

Neil Druckmann, the creator of the games and a co-creator on the TV series, said that we shouldn’t bet on seeing another video game.

“I was waiting for this question,” Druckmann told Variety. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

As for the TV adaptation, it’s unclear how many more seasons of the show there will be after this one. What we do know, though, is that this season does not cover the entirety of Part II.

“It feels like we’ve got one or two more seasons,” Craig Mazin, Druckmann’s co-creator, says. “It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets big. You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.”

So the future is very much up in the air, although we know for sure that we’re getting at least one more season of the show. Fans will just have to relish that, and hope that Druckmann can’t resist revisiting his signature world.

When The Last of Us premiered in 2023, the video game adaptation was instantly one of the most beloved adaptations of its kind in history. The HBO series faithfully told the story of the first game, and now, we've got our first look at what might be coming in season 2.

That includes glimpses of new characters introduced in the sequel to the game, The Last of Us Part 2, including Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), a famously divisive character who will be central to the story moving forward. The trailer also gives us glimpses of Ellie and Joel's life in Wyoming, and picks up five years after the events of the first game. On top of all that, we also get a glimpse at more clickers than we ever saw during the show's first season.

There's fan backlash, and then there's what happened around the release of The Last of Us: Part 2. The game was characterized by severe hate from fans, specifically around the character of Abby, a muscular, capable woman who was seen as too masculine by some fans, who also wrongly assumed that she was a trans character based on leaks.

Now, Kaitlyn Dever is attempting to translate that character to live-action for season 2 of The Last of Us TV show, and the backlash has apparently translated right alongside her. According to Dever's co-star on the second season Isabella Merced, Dever required extra security on set to protect her from a particularly aggravated group of fans.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Coming May 12th, 2023 – Nintendo Switch

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" essentially saved Nintendo when it was released with the Switch in March of 2017. After the financial failures of the Wii U, the famous Japanese software giant needed a rejuvenation potion to restore its once mighty status atop the video gaming market. The open-world adventure game did all of this and much more, and fans have been waiting patiently for the sequel for half a decade. The curtain will finally open on "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" in May of this year, and we're more than ready for a second helping of the franchise's new style.  It should serve as a great bookend to the Switch era as people start to wonder where the Big N will go next to compete with Sony and Microsoft for the rest of the 2020s.
