Infiniti (and parent brand Nissan) are hardly staples in the overlanding community. But the recently unveiled QX80 Terrain Spec has us thinking the luxury automaker may finally have its sights set on the market.
The Terrain Spec is one of two 2026 QX80 concepts (along with the on-road, performance-minded Track Spec) that Infiniti recently revealed during this year’s Monterey Car Week with the simple mission of “confidently bring[ing] luxury to untamed terrain” and “push[ing] the boundaries of what’s beautiful, capable and bold,” according to David Woodhouse, VP Nissan Design America. On paper, the Terrain Spec variant boasts everything we look for in a solid overlanding rig. That includes all-terrain tires, a taller ride height, and a roof-mounted lightbar, plus more durable fenders and brush guards to survive the inevitable scrapes and scuffs while out on the trail. A pop-up rooftop tent is standard, ensuring the QX80 converts seamlessly into a proper backcountry basecamp. Exterior design elements, such as a side-exit exhaust and a satin basalt wrap, add a more rugged feel. For now, it seems likely the overlanding-focused variant will get the QX80’s very capable twin-turbo 3.5L V6 pushing 450 horsepower and an off-road-friendly 516 lb.-ft. of torque.
True to Infiniti’s high-end luxury roots, the QX80 features next-gen tech conveniences that should make navigating tough trails even easier. Invisible Hood View projects the terrain ahead and under the SUV onto in-cabin monitors. Combined with Infiniti’s own 3D Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, which provides a rotating view around the vehicle, the two technologies allow drivers to effortlessly eyeball approach angles, trail debris, and other terrain challenges.
The Infiniti QX80 Terrain Spec is only a concept vehicle — for now. But the brand has committed to bringing its high-minded designs to market quickly. So, a production version could be in the works, if only as an ultra-limited-edition vehicle.
