This minimal glove box gadget kept my car clean all road trip long

The compact Hedgehog TurboVac does way more than tidy your car

Vacuum cleaning a car dash
Rachel Dennis / The Manual

As a full-time nomad who travels by car, I’ve learned an important truth – the crumbs and dust bunnies add up fast, so you need to stay ahead of them with a portable car vacuum. Even one stray chip can slip through the passenger seat cracks and crush into a pile of unsightly particles. Imagine this multiplied by three daily meals on a major U.S. road trip; it could add up to a crunchy carpet full of regret.

It took a while to solve the problem, despite over two years of testing on the road. My first two vacuums didn’t make the cut — the first was too bulky, the second didn’t have enough power to get the job done. My Goldilocks solution? The Hedgehog TurboVac, which strikes a balance between portability and power with its collapsible design and 14,000 Pa suction.

But it’s more than a portable vacuum; it’s practically a DIY car detailing assistant. Here’s my firsthand experience with the sleek road trip accessory.

Why this vacuum excelled when my first two didn’t

I elect the Hedgehog TurboVac as the best car vacuum for road trips based on its pocket-sized power. It only weighs 1.4 pounds and measures less than a foot long at 8.5 inches with a 0.25-liter dust bin.

Best of all, its parts are detachable, so it’s easy to disassemble and slip into its sleek black pouch. I like to store it under the passenger seat or in the glove compartment for fast access, which means I attend to messes in the car much sooner since it isn’t stored in the nether regions of my trunk.

It’s USB-C compatible and easy to charge via my car charger or power bank, no pesky wall outlet needed. You can expect about 12 to 30 minutes of juice, and there is a low and high power setting you can toggle to extend the battery life.

Another favorite feature is the Hedgehog TurboVac’s easy one-touch dump that lets you get the grime out without ever dirtying your hands. It comes with a washable HEPA filter, so it’s easy to keep the inside clean without the need for disposable filters — something particularly challenging to source on a road trip.

Real use cases for the curious road tripper

The Hedgehog TurboVac can prevent plenty of road trip mistakes and eliminate the need for excess gear, because it’s a multifunctional tool that goes well beyond cleaning your car mats. It is also a very powerful blower, so it has uses you may never think of:

  • Blast sand and dirt out of small electronics like phones and camera lenses
  • Inflate camping and water equipment like tubes and air mattresses
  • Use the crevice wand to detail vacuum crumb-filled cracks in your car
  • Dust your car’s dash with the brush attachment
  • Pulling pesky rocks out of your trail and hiking shoes
  • Detail your vehicle with the numerous attachments after a long, messy drive

Don’t just keep this bad boy in the car; get your money’s worth by keeping it handy at home if you’re not on the road full-time, like me. I’ve been able to test it indoors, and also love it as a quick solution for tidying up around a litter box or picking up stray kitchen crumbs.

Is the TurboVAC worthy of your car’s precious real estate?

So I’m crazy about Hedgehog’s TurboVac and think it’s the best portable car vacuum I’ve ever had, but is it right for you?

It depends on what you value. If portability is your goal, I think it’s a great fit. Not only is it easy to carry in the car, but its small size makes it manageable to charge while driving, without overpowering your cup holders with its size.

If you’re looking for the strongest solution, this may not be it. I’ve seen other vacuums on the market offering higher suction at a similar size and price point. But my take is that it’s the right amount of suction for a car, picking up small and medium debris without inhaling my loose quarters on the floor, allowing me to retrieve them without needing to dig through the dusty inner chamber of the vacuum.

All in all, this handy portable car vacuum hits the sweet spot for anyone planning a road trip with its reasonable price point, sufficient suction, and exceptionally slim construction. It’s a game-changer that preserves your car and gives you peace of mind, so I recommend making room for it in your glove compartment before your next car-bound adventure.

Royal Enfield gets World Origin recognition for their 125th anniversary
Pure motorcycling lands an honored plaque to go along with the 2026 Royal Enfield Classic 650 125th Anniversary Edition
Headlight, Transportation, Vehicle

What do Penicillin, a tank, Monty Python, the color mauve, and a Royal Enfield have in common? Go ahead, take a sec, because I couldn't answer this question when I was asked. They are all accredited sites from World Origin Site. What does that mean? It means that something unique, groundbreaking, and world-changing happened, and we want to remember it. The locations included in the list commemorate some of the world's most significant cultural events. And at the end of the day, these events are cemented in our collective cultural consciousness. The newest inclusion is Royal Enfield, who recieved thier plaque at the site of their first factory, where they unveiled their 2026 Royal Enfield Classic 650 125th Anniversary Edition.

It’s just a wall in Redditch today, but 125-years-ago, somebody did something that changed the world, and we’re here to mark the exact spot. - Martin Wilkie, Founder, World Origin Site

25 years of Fast & Furious legacy all at the tip of your fingers
Petersen Automotive Museum is giving you the chance to see the cars that raced into our hearts with Dom and Brian.
Car, Car Show, Transportation

Yesterday marked 25 years since the release of one of the greatest movies of our generation. Two and a half decades since Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) went undercover with the Toretto family to scour the world of illegal street racing in search of those responsible for truck heists. Of course, who could resist the idea that family conquers all and the charm of the patriarch, Dominic (Vin Diesel), and his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster). However you may feel about the ten movies that followed (that is right...TEN), the original The Fast and the Furious redefined an entire automotive culture for a new century. I mean, truly, how did Tej (Ludacris) go from garage owning gear head in Miami to super hacker with no explanation? Anyway, if you are like me, you loved the ridiculous cars that have shown up through the years, and that means you will be excited to know that the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles expanded their "Fast & Furious Legacy" exhibit to include all of your favorite super machines.

Maserati refreshes its entire lineup for the 2027 model year
A more powerful engine, a new front end, and several features now available as standard
Maserati's 2027 lineup of vehicles

A new face, a luxury touch on everything you interact with, and a not insignificant power boost to one of the most interesting V6 engines on the planet. These are the highlights of Maserati’s 2027 lineup. Though it’s technically a bit of a mid-cycle refresh, no new vehicles are being released, there are still some notable differences between the upcoming Maseratis and their 2026 equivalents. It’s Maserati’s biggest string of updates since last year’s MCPura launch, with several supercar-inspired tweaks making their way to the likes of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio.

The Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio both benefit from an extra 40 horsepower, with the 3-liter V6 Nettuno engine under the hood now pumping out 582 horsepower at its peak. Overall responsiveness of the engine and transmission has been improved too, due to an updated calibration, and the sound-boosting Sportivo exhaust now comes as standard with all ICE Maseratis. Both vehicles, along with the Folgore, also come with a more aggressive front end. The reworked air intakes arguably stand out most on the new fascia, though the large front splitter and “shark nose” styling are both very apparent.
