Formula E Gen4 sets new record for power and sustainability

The FIA and Formula E have taken the wraps off the Gen4 race car, the most advanced machine the championship has ever built. It’s faster, tougher, and greener than anything before it and a showcase of how far electric racing technology has come since the series began in 2014. The Gen4 will hit the grid in the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season, with a major boost in both speed and sustainability.

Formula E Gen4 sets new mark for power

The Gen4 isn’t just about raw numbers, though the specs are hard to ignore. With 600 kW of peak power — equal to more than 815 horsepower — and active all-wheel drive, it’s the quickest, most demanding Formula E car yet. Two aerodynamic setups allow teams to switch between high-downforce qualifying trim and a lower-drag race configuration. With regenerative braking up to 700 kW and attack mode surging to 600 kW for overtakes, the tech means more energy recovery, faster laps, and tighter racing.

Sustainability takes center stage

Every part of the Gen4 has been designed with sustainability in mind. Its chassis and bodywork are made entirely from recyclable materials, at least 20 percent of which are already recycled. Nearly 100 percent motor efficiency means the car can recover about 40 percent of its energy during a race. From the ethically sourced battery materials to next-generation tires, it’s built to prove that top-level motorsport can also drive sustainability.

Now, manufacturers including Porsche, Nissan, Stellantis, Jaguar, and Lola Cars will fine-tune their versions of the Gen4 ahead of its debut. Their combined expertise will push the car’s limits. The 2026/27 season should see the fastest and most competitive Formula E racing yet.

The formulation developed with McLaren Racing has been validated to maintain its performance over several thousand kilometers under Formula 1 conditions.
