Why is the last buttonhole on a shirt’s placket sewn horizontally?

This nifty little button hole is the game changer on a shirt from being good and great. The horizontal button hole acts like an anchor to the shirt, reducing pul, stress and generally 'taking one for the team' so to speak.

I had thought it was so you'd know it was the last button on the shirt as you were dressing....
