The Ultimate Sock Gift Guide
We are big sock lovers in our office.
We are pretty pumped that the ‘sockless’ look has faded into its smelly, blistered ‘why’ folder. Socks have come a long way from the tube socks we wore as kids and the weird panty hose thin ones our dads wore to the office. Now there is a plethora of brands out there, many made right here in the USA, which are providing men with a little ‘sock-it-to-me’ excitement in our daily dress.
Below are some we wouldn’t mind unwrapping this season:
Launching in New York City’s Garment District (but made in North Carolina), the sock designs are inspired by the city and its’ art, architecture and design. But don’t worry, there aren’t taxi cabs all over them. This season started off with a series of architectural details culled from notable historic New York City buildings. With a primary focus on ornamentation, they examined flooring, facades, and even ceilings, exploring different decorative treatments from the first half of the 20th century. Features like coffered ceilings, inlaid floors, and filigree grillwork were then combined with traditional menswear motifs to create modern, architectural patterns, which still maintain a familiar, heritage vibe.
How can we go through the winter without a Fair Isle print? These socks, knit in Pennsylvania, are the traditional Scottish pattern but spun with an Italian Cashmere blend to keep you warm and toasty no matter where you end up after the staff holiday party.
Born from a mission to help those in need, Bombas donates a pair for every pair you buy. Bombas recently reached their one millionth donation milestone. BOOM. They also spent two years on R&D to produce a sock that stays up, has a blister tab, provides arch support, and has a reinforced footbed for serious comfort. Check out the holiday gift box they put together this year ($49).
The name says it all. Based in Northfield Vermont for 40 years, these socks are made by people who test out their products on hikes, bikes and runs. When asked about manufacturing in America they explain that, “We don’t do it because it’s the easy thing to do, we do it because it’s the right thing to do. We do it because for us, it’s the only way to do it. There are faster and cheaper alternatives but nobody ever outsourced anything for quality.” Can we get an amen?
Another do gooder brand we are fans of, Farm to Feet are made in North Carolina using all American materials including wool from the American Sheep Industry ranchers. Cokeville, Wyoming is home to Roberts Ranch, one of many sheep farms supplying Farm To Feet with the 100% US-grown merino wool that makes socks like the Cokeville so comfortable in all types of weather. This medium-weight crew sock has boot-friendly top-to-toe cushioning along the instep and up the shaft, plus a wilderness-inspired tree motif that will make you feel like you’re home on the range, even in the heart of the city. Available in holiday colors green and red.
Knitted in the oldest sock mills in the US (Chattanooga, TN and Fort Payne, AL), FITS craft high quality merino wool socks for every activity from office socks to hiking, biking and running.Utilizing only the best raw materials available, FITS incorporates innovative, proprietary engineering and technology to create seriously comfortable, awesome-fitting sock. The Business Crew style just launched this fall so you finally have a quality, comfortable sock for the office. FITS patented Full Contact Fit hugs the contours of your foot and stays put so there are no loose socks to constantly have to pull up.
Based in the South Bay region of Southern California, Legends has the whole ‘class to practice’ sock perfectly. Co-founded by a former Division 1 lacrosse player (and current Head Coach for Loyola Marymount University’s lacrosse team,) the socks (not yours mind you) are lab-tested by hundreds of athletes for superior durability, comfort and support. Whether you’re hitting the basketball court or skateboarding along the pier, Legends is designed to reinforce and cushion every step. The brand also offers a modern spin on performance socks, capturing the essence of the surf community as well as its vibrant art scene and nightlife. Teaming up with young, local artists, Legends eschews the generic logos and patterns of most sock brands in favor of hand-drawn designs and original photography, commissioned especially from the South Bay. The Locals Only collection features must-visit destinations that capture the spirit of community and creativity that Legends represents, all shot by local photographers in each location.
We love the concept of this brand. First off you can only order a stack of socks. That way you are covered for a while and you have an amazing group of colorful socks to choose from. Secondly, they have a recycling program so send your old socks in and they will either donate them to people in need if they are in good shape or send them to textile recyclers. Your old socks could become insulation. Who knew?
Capitalism with a conscious is what Smart Wool is all about. 90% of their products are made in the USA and their Advocacy Fund supports non-profits that get kids into the great outdoors while educating them about the environment. They make socks for everyone from hikers and runners to fishers and skiers.
Founded in 2009, this California based company takes artistic socks to the next level (aliens, tribal prints and palm trees can all be found on their socks), yet with their combed cotton, deep heel pocket and elastic arch cradle, they are also extremely cozy. In 2015 they became the official sock of the NBA and in 2016 the MLB. This season we are hoping for the Made in USA collection to be nicely wrapped and ready for us.
United By Blue was founded in 2010, driven by the idea of associating the sale of each product with a concrete environmental action. For every product sold, United By Blue removes one pound of trash from oceans and waterways through company organized and hosted cleanups. While we are fans of nearly every item on their site, the Ultimate American Sock really takes the cake. Made with bison down these are big guns for your cold dogs and will keep your feet warm and dry all winter long. Compared to wool, bison down is warmer, better for moisture control, more durable and easier to care for. Note: They always have these puppies on back order so order asap!
