Getting Prepped for the Cold with Style

Knitwear can get a bad rap in the men’s world.  It can be thought of as a real Werther’s Originals look, or too Esty (read hipster) or just plain cheap (hello gas station black beanie!).  But if you dig deeper, knitwear can be some of the most luxurious and cool looking accessories to beat the cold.  Think of great mills in Scotland, and the quality and craftsmanship that come out of those. Those knits are for beer swilling, whiskey pounding m-e-n!

For fall 2013 here are great knit options to not only keep you warm, but do it with style.  One of the coolest men’s stores in the country is Unionmade.  With four stores on the West Coast, Unionmade, was one of the early appreciators of, the now mainstream, well-made American style.

The Manual spoke with Todd Barket, the co-founder of Unionmade, to get his take on things:

What are you most looking forward to about cold weather accessories this fall?

I’m most excited about things that have texture and are hand knit.  My favorite pieces are from Howlin, which is all made in Scotland.

What is a stand-out this season?

Donnegal looks great this season and it’s a great way to take some of the traditional stayed items such as hats and gloves and give them a masculine update.  I particularly love the salt and pepper pieces.

If a new coat isn’t in your future this season, new accessories can make a #major difference. Plaids, stripes, tweeds or camo, can help you add a pop of style when the cold hits.
